Activists rally at Vancouver Aquarium for higher welfare rates

Anti-poverty activists rallied outside the Vancouver Aquarium Thursday morning demanding Premier Christy Clark raise welfare rates.

The group said they chose the aquarium because a year ago the premier said families should go to the facility on the newly created Family Day holiday.

But they said with today’s welfare rate in B.C., many families are living in poverty and will not be able to afford a trip to the Aquarium.

Stacey Bonefant, a mother of two boys, said she is strapped to afford just food with the current welfare rate.

�You can’t survive on the welfare rate,� said Bonefant. �We are here today
