Aquarium backers hold breath as Clearwater council votes

City Council members will decide tonight if voters will determine whether to lease the City Hall property downtown to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium for a new $160 million facility.

A public vote is required before the aquarium can move forward with plans for the 200,000-square-foot attraction. At issue for voters in a November referendum would be the aquarium’s request for a 60-year, no-cost lease on the public property.

Aquarium officials also would seek $35 million to $60 million in government funding from state agencies, county bed tax funds and city tax-increment financing set aside for downtown development.
