Aquarium goes belly-up

After spending thousands of dollars — exactly how many thousands is in dispute — Port Huron officials said an aquarium is dead in the water, for now.

City Manager Bruce Brown said the city can’t afford to build an aquarium from scratch. It would cost $8 million for the aquarium itself and an additional $20 million for the building, he said.

“We came to the conclusion it was a doable project, just not within a $20 million building,” Brown said.

In May 2010, the city approved paying New Zealand-based Marinescape Ecoaquariums $100,000 to study the feasibility of opening an aquarium at the site
