Aquarium hoping to add saltwater well

But the glass is not the only thing that separates the fish tanks from the ocean.

The aquarium uses manmade saltwater, despite its proximity to the beach. The facility sits just a few hundred feet from the Atlantic.

“People are always surprised that we’re this close to the ocean and we make our own saltwater,” said Paul Barrington, the director of husbandry and operations at the aquarium.

The aquarium uses treated municipal water from the Carolina Beach Treatment Plant to make around 1.3 million gallons of saltwater annually at a cost of about $70,000.
