Aquarium owner defends his track record

AUSTIN (KXAN) – The owner of an aquarium planned to open in Northwest Austin later this year said allegations that he needlessly allowed hundreds of fish and animals to die at similar facilities in Oregon and Idaho are unfounded.

Vince Covino, who with his brother owns those aquariums, plans open shop at a shuttered Lacks furniture store on U.S. 183 near Lakeline Mall. He acknowledged in an interview with KXAN on Wednesday that fish died at those locations.

But he said the deaths were not because of abuse or neglect.

“If 200 animals die out of 10,000, that’s an 8 percent mortality rate,”
