Aquarium: Released great white dies

A great white shark has died a little more than a week after it was released off the Southern California coast, the Monterey Bay Aquarium announced Wednesday.

The shark, which measured 4-feet-10-inches long and weighed 52 pounds, died shortly after its Oct. 25 release in Goleta in Santa Barbara County, aquarium officials said.

The electronic tracking tag was recovered Sunday, they said. It had slid off the shark the day before. The male shark was released after 55 days in captivity at the aquarium.

The shark’s death is the first among the six young sharks released since 2004, officials said.
