Aquarium saves trapped sea lion

Vancouver Aquarium veterinarian Dr. Martin Haulena estimates there could be up to 400 sea lions swimming along B.C.’s coast that are entangled in discarded plastic wrapping.

Haulena credited the aquarium’s Mammal Rescue Centre and a host of volunteers who helped save a sea lion from a painful life in the Fanny Bay area of Vancouver Island.

Haulena said area residents reported a sea lion in obvious discomfort because it had wrapped itself in plastic used for packaging. But when a team went to the Island last weekend, they could not find the distressed creature.
