Aquarium staff perform necropsy on whale that died on Duxbury Beach

A boater pushed two stranded pilot whales back into the water, but a third died on Duxbury Beach after they became stranded and the tide went out.

Staff from New England Aquarium in Boston were called to the beach Monday, but there was nothing they could do for the young male whale, which died quickly on the sand.

Aquarium spokesman Tony LaCasse said the staffers performed an necropsy on the beach before burying the whale in a 9-foot-deep hole dug by a front-end loader.

The dead whale was a young adult about 14 1/2 feet long, LaCasse said. Adult pilot whales can grow
