Aquarium team rescues hurt sea lion

An ailing 200-kilogram sea lion that has a hook embedded in its gut is being treated at Vancouver Aquarium’s Marine Mammal Rescue Centre after being rescued from the water off Ucluelet.

The young male was noticed by residents Tuesday because it had a footlong salmon flasher hanging from its left cheek. The aquarium’s veterinarian, Martin Haulena, and a rescue team rushed to Vancouver Island.

“When we arrived on site, we immediately knew he wasn’t in good shape. The fishing hook was embedded quite deep in the gastrointestinal tract and we noticed his poor condition,” Haulena said.
