Belle Isle Aquarium a work in progress for volunteers

Detroit – As the debate over who will control the future of Belle Isle heats up, one of the island’s gems is working to return to its former glory.

The Belle Isle Aquarium reopened to the public in September, after being shuttered for financial reasons since 2005. But even though the nation’s oldest operating aquarium was resurrected, its survival is based substantially on grants, donations and a group of dedicated volunteers.
