Belle Isle Aquarium officially reopens today

Detroit Mayor Dave Bing helped usher in a new era for the Belle Isle Aquarium on Friday, speaking at a ribbon-cutting ceremony in advance of today’s grand opening.

The volunteer-run aquarium will officially reopen at 10 a.m. today, seven years after budget cuts led the city to close the Albert Kahn-designed fishbowl. Admission is free and open to the public 10 a.m.-3 p.m. every Saturday.

For organizers Jennifer Boardman and Vance Patrick of the Belle Isle Conservancy and fish curator Gary Balduc, the grand opening is the culmination of years of work, including a final six-month push to bring the aquarium back
