Belle Isle aquarium reopens to fanfare

Detroit — The Belle Isle Aquarium reopened Friday morning with a formal ribbon-cutting attended by the mayor and conservancy members who fought for years to bring the facility back to life.

It is the oldest operating aquarium in the country, city officials said.

Mayor Dave Bing, who is pressing forward with a lease agreement for the state to operate Belle Isle as a state park, said the rebirth of the aquarium is a big deal in helping to restore Detroit.

“It’s a great example of making public-private partnerships work in transforming Detroit,” the mayor said.
