Belle Isle Aquarium treads water amid dispute over island's future

DETROIT (AP) — The Belle Isle Aquarium has reopened and is trying to stay afloat as the future of the Detroit’s island park is debated.

The Detroit News reported Sunday that supporters of the aquarium, which reopened in September, are watching what happens with a dispute over whether the financially struggling city should lease the park to the state of Michigan. The Detroit City Council is expected to decide this week amid arguments on both sides.

Meanwhile, the aquarium that had to close in 2005 for financial reasons is doing what it can with what it has. It’s been surviving on volunteers,
