Belle Isle tradition: Aquarium's koi transferred to outdoor pond

The koi were jumping Saturday morning in the basement tanks at the Belle Isle Aquarium as the fish were netted and dropped into waiting buckets.

Nearby, a crowd of children pointed and shouted, “Whoa!” as they waited with their buckets to transfer the colorful fish to the aquarium’s outdoor pond. A few children wore “koi wrangler” buttons.

The koi transfer has become a kind of annual celebration of spring as the numbers of volunteers have ballooned the last couple of years, thanks in part to social media. Saturday’s weather cooperated, with sunny skies and temperatures around 60 degrees, luring a couple hundred
