Detroit's Belle Isle Aquarium to reopen three days a month

Detroit — The Belle Isle Aquarium will reopen to the public three days a month starting next month, city officials and others confirmed Friday.

Mayor Dave Bing will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony as early as Sept. 14.

The aquarium, which has been closed since 2005, will be open one Sunday a month and the first and third Saturdays of the month.

City officials have been working for months with the Belle Isle Conservancy, which will operate the facility with volunteers.

The conservancy has been holding fundraisers, such as one in June, to help reopen the aquarium, which dates to 1904.
