Helping aquarium’s patients will be easier

Veterinarian Dr. Shane Boylan once had to run up and down four flights of stairs at the South Carolina Aquarium to retrieve items while performing a medical procedure on injured animals.

Not anymore.

The waterfront tourist attraction unveiled its new aquatic animal medical facility on Thursday that puts state-of-the-art medical equipment all in one place.

The new center costs about $500,000 and gives the aquarium a facility that few others in the country have. It was made possible through monetary gifts and the donation of highly technical operating room overhead booms and other equipment by Berchtold Corp. in North Charleston,
