Rare sight at Vancouver Aquarium as giant Pacific octopus eggs hatch

VANCOUVER — Close to 300 baby Pacific octopuses can be found floating around in a tank at the Vancouver Aquarium after they hatched there earlier this week but their chances of survival are slim.

“Although it is not unusual for octopus eggs to hatch in aquariums, very few hatchings have ever survived,” said Dennis Thoney, Director of Animal Operations at the aquarium.

Female Pacific octopus C.C., a resident at the aquarium, mated with male Pacific octopus Clove last October. After the mating session, C.C. laid close to 100,000 eggs.
