Virginia Aquarium gets first zebra shark

VIRGINIA BEACH – The Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center is now home to a zebra shark.

On Tuesday, the curator of fishes will discuss the importance of Mena, a 5-foot long, 37-pound juvenile shark caught off Indonesia.

“Her eyes are actually on the side of her head and the holes you see (in the image) are the nostrils,” explained spokeswoman Joan Barns.

Zebra sharks are listed as a vulnerable species and work continues to conserve them.

Once she’s of breeding age, the aquarium will work to find her a suitable mate.
